Origin and history
The Church of Saint-Geniès-de-Rome de Cesseras, listed as a Historic Monument in 1933, is a typical example of 15th-century Gothic Languedoc architecture. It consists of a unique nave, accompanied by lateral chapels raised between the foothills, and a polygonal choir. The ensemble is vaulted in stone, with carved keys, and a northern chapel presents a vault with ivy. Its bell tower, sober, rises to the southwest corner of the nave.
The exterior construction uses rubble, while the arches, sills of the bays and corners of the foothills are made of cut stones. This type of building reflects the local architectural practices of the time, where churches served as a central place of worship for rural communities. Their simple but robust structure allowed to welcome the faithful while marking the religious landscape of Languedoc.
The church is today owned by the commune of Cesseras, in the Hérault department, in the Occitanie region. Although its exact location is approximate (precision noted 5/10), it remains a major architectural testimony of the late medieval period in the area.
