Origin and history

Saint-Geniez de Saint-Geniez-d'Olt Church is a religious building located in the Aveyron department in the Occitanie region. It was built between the 17th century for the façade, the porch and the porch, and the first half of the 18th century for the rest of the building, designed by architect Jean Parie. This monument illustrates the transition between Baroque and classical styles, typical of the southern churches of this period.

The façade, the porch and the dome-covered porch were classified as historic monuments as early as 1931, recognizing their exceptional heritage value. In 1990, the entire church (with the exception of those already classified) was inscribed, consolidating its protection. These measures reflect the historic and architectural significance of the building, marked by a careful ornamentation and harmonious integration into the urban landscape of Saint-Geniez-d'Olt.

Located in Place de la Halle, on the right bank of the Lot, the church occupies a central position in the commune. Its dome porch and monumental façade make it a major visual landmark, while its history is closely linked to the urban and religious evolution of the Rouergue. The architect Jean Parie, the project's main contractor in the 18th century, left a lasting mark on the local heritage, combining tradition and architectural innovation.

The partial classification of 1931 and the inscription of 1990 underline the duality of this monument: a baroque façade emblematic of the seventeenth century, contrasting with a nave and a choir representative of the classical taste of the following century. This stylistic complementarity makes it a valuable testimony to the evolution of the sacred arts in Occitanie, while anchoring the building in the daily lives of the inhabitants, as evidenced by its location in a lively public square.
