Origin and history

The Saint-Georges church of Yvetot-Bocage, dedicated to Georges de Lydda, is a Catholic building located in the Manche, Normandy. Its construction spans several centuries, with a 13th century choir inspired by the Cathedral of Coutances, a nave rebuilt in the 18th century, and a 15th century portal decorated with sculptures symbolizing the evangelists. The interior, marked by spans and lateral chapels dated 1645, combines Gothic elements and subsequent restorations, such as the triumphal arch.

The bell tower, covered with a building, is accessible by a screw staircase housed in an adjacent turret. The flat bedside, pierced with three bays, preserves sexpartite vaults and plant capitals, partially modified to incorporate flamboyant Gothic arcades. The building, classified as a historic monument in 1973, houses remarkable furniture, including 16th and 17th century statues, a pulpit to preach, and an 18th century silver box.

Among the protected objects are a Virgin with Child made of polychrome wood (XVI century), a statue of Saint Catherine of Alexandria attributed to Catherine of Medici, and a beam of carved glory. These elements illustrate the artistic and religious evolution of the monument, marked by royal gifts and successive restorations. The church, a communal property, remains a major architectural testimony of Lower Normandy.

The architecture combines medieval and classical influences, with Gothic columns, broken cradle vaults, and low arches. Lateral chapels, added in the 17th century, reflect the liturgical adaptations of the period. The 1973 classification underlines its heritage value, while classified movable objects, such as the Holy Oil Box (1784), enrich its history.
