Origin and history

The church of Saint-Georges in Belloy-en-France, located in Val-d'Oise, is a religious building whose oldest parts date back to the late twelfth century. The Romanesque bell tower and the northern crusillon, of primitive Gothic style, are the remains of this era. The choir and chapel of Sainte-Geneviève, built in the 14th century, illustrate the late radiant Gothic style, while the nave and the collaterals, vaulted in the 16th century, adopt a flamboyant Gothic style. The western portal, a masterpiece of the Renaissance, dates from the same period.

The church was listed as a historic monument in 1846, among the first in the department. It underwent restorations in the 19th century, notably under the direction of Eugene Viollet-le-Duc. The building preserves an active liturgical life, with Masses celebrated according to the tridentine rite. The parish, attached to the diocese of Pontoise, also includes the neighbouring communes of Villaines-sous-Bois and Villiers-le-Sec.

The history of the parish dates back to the ninth century, with a first mention of a basilica dedicated to Saint George in 840. Saint-Denis Abbey, which owned land in Belloy, played an important role in the development of the village. The present church, largely rebuilt in the 14th and 16th centuries, was damaged during the Hundred Years War and the wars of religion. The seigneurs of Belloy, notably Guillaume de Belloy and his wife Antoinette de Pertuis, financed works in the sixteenth century.

The church's furniture includes remarkable elements, such as the 16th-century baptismal fonts, a pulpit to be preached, and an 18th-century work bench, as well as choir woodwork dating back to 1717. Several funeral slabs, including Guillaume de Belloy's and his wife's, are preserved in the building. The interior architecture, with its vaults of liernes and thirdons, and its carved capitals, bears witness to the artistic richness of the Gothic and Renaissance periods.

The exterior of the church features a western Renaissance façade, decorated with sculptures and motifs inspired by antiquity. The lateral elevations and the bedside, with their foothills and cornices, reflect the different construction campaigns. The Sainte-Geneviève chapel, south of the choir, and the Virgin's chapel, north, add to the architectural complexity of the building.

Today, Saint-Georges Church remains an active place of worship and an important testimony to the religious and architectural heritage of Île-de-France. Its restoration and preservation make it an emblematic monument of the region, attracting visitors and faithful.
