Origin and history

Saint-Georges Church is a Catholic church located in the commune of Saint-Georges-sur-Allier, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 13th century, it is a typical example of the medieval religious architecture of this period. Its portal, particularly remarkable, was classified as historical monuments in 1886, while the rest of the building was listed in 1926.

The location of the church, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme, is part of a historical context marked by the development of villages and parishes around religious buildings. These churches served not only as places of worship, but also as community centres for social gatherings and local decisions. The thirteenth century, the period of church construction, corresponds to an era of relative prosperity for the region, with developing agriculture and growing trade.

The building is now owned by the municipality of Saint-Georges-sur-Allier. Although available sources do not specify its current state of openness to the public, its status as a historic monument makes it a protected and potentially accessible heritage. The protected elements specifically include the gate, classified in 1886, as well as the rest of the church, registered in 1926, with the exception of the parts already classified.
