Origin and history

The church of Saint-Germain de Loisé, located in Mortagne-au-Perche in Orne, has its origins in the 11th century, although its primitive parts have almost completely disappeared. Its foundation is attributed to the monks of the abbey Saint-Germain-des-Prés (Paris), owners of an estate in Corbon County. In 1080, a donation charter was established for the Benedictine Abbey of Nogent-le-Rotrou, marking its local anchor. The present building, which was thoroughly renovated in the 16th and 17th centuries, preserves a nave bordered by low-lying sides and a Renaissance-style bedside, an example of the architectural evolution of the region.

Ranked a Historic Monument on 19 June 1972 at the initiative of Mayor Robert Tanné and historian Michel Fleury, the church enjoys enhanced heritage protection. Its urban environment is remarkable: surrounded by the streets of Champaillaume (D8), Saint-Germain and Logis, it is bordered to the south by Michel-Fleury mail, a parking lot shaded by chestnut trees. This framework reflects its integration into the historical fabric of Mortagne-au-Perche, a city with preserved heritage.

The preservation of the building has been ensured since 2006 by the association Protection of the Church of Loisé, which became Mortagne-au-Perche Heritage in 2019. This structure expands its activity to include all local heritage, furniture and real estate, and organizes cultural events. These include commemorations in tribute to Michel Fleury (2012) and Abbé Jean Aubry (2016), as well as concerts such as Un ésété lyrique (2023), which regularly animate the place.

The church remains an active place of worship, attached to the parish of Sainte-Céronne-au-Perche, and opens up to artistic events, such as the hearing of Renaissance polyphonies in 2019. Its management is shared between the municipality (owner) and the local association, which coordinates group visits on request. The protected elements, listed under AL 111 in the Merimée base, illustrate its importance in the religious and architectural landscape of the Orne.
