Origin and history
The Saint-Germain-de-Paris church of La Celle-les-Bordes has its origins since the 9th century, when it belonged to the abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. From that time on, it seems to be linked to a priory whose exact location remains undetermined. In the 13th century, it appeared in the foal of Paris as a cure, confirming its central role in local religious life. Its history is marked by destruction and reconstruction, especially after the Hundred Years' War, which required major work.
The reconstruction of the church ended in 1524, the date of its dedication, after work undertaken in the 15th and 16th centuries. These changes reflect the needs of a changing rural community after the devastation of the war. The building, registered with the Historical Monuments in 1981, thus preserves architectural traces of its multiple periods of construction, from late Gothic to Romanesque.
Today, the Saint-Germain-de-Paris church remains a testimony to the religious and social evolutions of the region. Its location in La Celle-les-Bordes, in the Yvelines, makes it a key heritage element of the Île-de-France. Although its geographical accuracy is considered "a priori satisfactory", its history remains partially enigmatic, mainly due to the disappearance of the traces of the medieval priory to which it was originally attached.
