Origin and history
The church of Saint-Gervais de Caux is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Caux, in the department of Hérault, in the Occitan region. Built between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, it is distinguished by remarkable architecture, including its apse with seven externally and circularly inside. A band at the base of the vault, partially cut in the 14th century, reflects the modifications made to enlarge the middle bay. The interior lateral arches, reproduced outside, are a rare feature in this southern region.
The bell tower, added in the late 13th or early 14th century, forms a porch at noon. Its two octagonal batteries, designed to facilitate circulation, support an upper floor open with twin bays under discharge arches. Originally, angled skunks, now replaced by an iron balustrade, ran the platform. The top of the bell tower, passing from square to octagonal, ends with a sharp stone arrow, while roses with four lobes illuminate the top floor.
Classified as a historic monument since October 10, 1913, the church Saint-Gervais de Caux is the property of the commune. The parish registers, beginning in 1672, mention that the building and its cemetery were once dedicated to the saints Gervais and Protais. Its architecture, including arch layout and bell tower structure, reflects medieval constructive techniques adapted to local needs.
The location of the church at 2 Rue Notre-Dame in Caux is specified by the Mérimée data, which confirm its membership in the religious and architectural heritage of the region. Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its historical importance and heritage value, reinforced by its early classification as historical monuments.
