Origin and history

The church of Saint-Gildas de Magoar is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Magoar in the Côtes-d'Armor department of Brittany. Built mainly in the 16th and 17th centuries, it embodies the Breton religious architecture of this period, with elements such as a nave, a low side, a bell tower, an entrance porch, an ossuary, and a seigneurial chapel. Its interior is distinguished by an apparent walled structure forming vault, while its exterior facades, animated by gables decorated with hooks, chimeras and florets, reflect an enlivened architectural arrangement.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 7 January 1929, the church of St.Gildas includes parts dating from the second half of the 15th century for the choir and the north arm, while the nave, south arm and south porch date back to the 16th century. The tower was erected between 1587 and 1623 by a certain O. Tili, before restorations were undertaken in 1787. The building, owned by the municipality, bears witness to centuries of local architectural and religious history.

Interior architectural details, such as carved sandstones and ground entrances, as well as exterior elements such as adorned gables, highlight the care taken to build it. The ossuary and the baptismal fonts complete this whole, recalling the liturgical and community uses of the era. The location of the church, specified by its address in Magoar (code Insee 22139), makes it a point of anchoring the Breton heritage in the country of Saint-Brieuc.
