Origin and history

The church of Saint-Grégoire de Théziers, located in the Gard department in the Occitanie region, is a Romanesque building built in the 12th century. It underwent major changes in the 16th, 17th and 19th centuries, reflecting architectural developments and the needs of the local community. The church consists of three parts, two of which are superimposed, and has a narrow semicircular bedside, backed by a bell tower with two campanary bays. Its southern facade, made of cut stone, is supported by four foothills and pierced with curved bays and a neo-classical door.

The church was fortified and built on a rock, with a sacristy dug in the rock supporting the tower and the bell tower, built in the 17th century and resumed in the 19th century. Originally, it was a small Romanesque church whose apse and nave remain in the cradle. Two successive enlargements marked its history: a vaulted span with liernes and thirdrons added west in 1537, then a larger nave to the south, built in the seventeenth century. The fortified gate, integrated with the old rampart, and the southern gate, decorated with doric and ionic pilasters, illustrate the richness of its architectural heritage.

Owned by the commune of Théziers, the church was listed as historical monuments on November 26, 1986. Its heteroclite architecture reveals various influences, ranging from preroman arches to Gothic and neo-classical elements. The chapel Saint-Amant, located close to a hill, completes the local religious heritage. The building, still in place in the centre of the village, bears witness to the history and transformations of Théziers throughout the centuries.
