Origin and history

The Saint-Jacques-de-la-Bouquerie church of Condom, located in Occitanie, is a historical monument whose origins date back to at least the fourteenth century. It was originally linked to the St. James Hospital, founded before 1380, and served as a stage on the way to Compostela. Its architecture, marked by a square bell tower and a flat bedside, reflects successive transformations in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The entrance door, adorned with a statue niche and a two-sided awning, as well as the boxed wooden panel inside, testify to its rich artistic and religious heritage.

In the 17th century, the church was used to welcome the pestifers, illustrating its spiritual and social role in the community. The southwest massif, which dominates the nave, houses chapels adjacent to a vaulted hall of the former pilgrims' hospital, classified with the building in 1988. The rectangular structure, sober but elegant, combines Gothic elements (baie en plein cintre) and classical elements (flat pilasters), reflecting the stylistic evolutions of its time.

Owned by the municipality of Condom, the church is today a vestige of local history, mixing jacquarian heritage, hospital memory and religious architecture. Its inscription in the Historical Monuments in 1988 underlines its heritage importance, while its location in the city centre (80 Rue de la République) makes it a point of interest for visitors exploring Gers and Occitanie.
