Origin and history

The church of Saint-Jacques de Montauban, located in the Tarn-et-Garonne department in the Occitan region, is one of the oldest monuments in the city, built in the 13th century shortly after its foundation. With the Old Bridge, it is one of the few medieval remains still in use today. Its brick architecture, typical of the Garonne Valley, and its octagonal bell tower in the Toulouse style make it a remarkable example of southern Gothic. The building underwent later transformations, such as the classical entrances (17th century) and neoromanes (19th century).

During the Wars of Religion, the church was partially destroyed in 1561 by the Calvinists, who cut down its vault and arrow before being looted. The siege of 1621 by Louis XIII left traces of balls on its fortified base. In 1629 Richelieu ordered his reconstruction. The bell tower, erected at the end of the 15th century, rests on a defensive structure bearing witness to this troubled period.

Ranked a historic monument in 1918, the church houses remarkable elements such as a neo-Roman mosaic of 1891 (after Raphael) and a Baroque pulpit. Its interior, sober with a unique nave and six chapels, includes a work by Jean-Marie-Joseph Ingres, father of the famous painter. The building thus illustrates the architectural and religious evolution of Montauban, marked by conflicts and reconstructions.

The church objects are referenced in the Palissy base, highlighting its rich heritage. Its historical role, both a place of worship and a symbol of community tensions, makes it a key witness to local history. Sources also mention ancient organs, studied in the 19th century by Édouard Forestié, and analyses of his status as a church of secular community in the Middle Ages (Raymond Rey 1956).
