Origin and history

The church of Saint-Jacques de Muret, located in Haute-Garonne, is a religious building whose origins date back to the 3rd quarter of the 12th century, with major additions in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. It is distinguished by its octagonal bell tower of the Toulouse type, classified as a historical monument in 1928, and its entrance gate, classified in 1935. The church as a whole was listed as historical monuments in 2005, highlighting its heritage importance.

The crypt, built in the 16th century, houses precious relics, including those of Saint Germier, as well as liturgical objects such as a polychrome wooden pietà (XVth–XVIth century) and an alabaster statue of Saint Anne (XIVth or 16th century, of English origin). Among the remarkable elements, there is also a 13th-century copper procession cross, decorated with turquoise and tetramorphic symbols, once preserved in the church of Saint-Amans.

The 19th century romantic organ, classified and restored between 1989 and 1991, illustrates the transition between Baroque and symphonic styles. His buffet, written in 2006, bears the Latin inscription "Laudate dominum in... organo", inviting to praise God with this instrument. The church also houses dedicated chapels (saint Dominique, Saint Joseph, Notre-Dame de la Salette), each enriched with paintings, statues and stained glass windows dating from the 18th to the 19th centuries.

The chorus and lsabside are decorated with marbles and bas-reliefs, including a rare representation of the Battle of Muret (1213), where St.Dominic is represented as a defender of the faith. The glory of St James, carved in the 19th century, dominates space, while liturgical objects (calices, ostensoirs, chasubles of the 18th to 19th centuries) testify to the richness of local worship. However, some items, such as a silver ciborium of 1634, were stolen in 1988.

The Saint-Germier chapel, built in 1873 by architect Joseph Raynaud, preserves relics of the saint in a 1882 shawl, while the Notre-Dame de la Salette chapel (1879) commemorates a 19th century Marian apparition. The stained glass windows, like those of Louis-Victor Gesta, and the ceramic sandstone sculptures of Gaston Virebent workshops, complement this artistic and religious heritage.

Finally, the church is linked to historical figures such as Simon IV de Montfort, mentioned in the bas-relief of the Battle of Muret, or Marshal Soult, of which a copy of a painting by Murillo (1874) adorns the nave. The gifts of local personalities, such as Marshal Niel (Bomarsund Cross, 1854), also marked his history.
