Origin and history

The Church of Santiago de Perros-Guirec, located in the Côtes-d'Armor, is a rare example of Breton Romanesque architecture, marked by remarkable sculptures. According to legend, it was founded by Saint Guirec, a Welsh monk from the 6th century, although its exact history remains unknown. The present building, built from the late 11th or early 12th century, preserves a Romanesque nave and south porch, extended in the 14th or 15th century by a Gothic nave and a western facade surmounted by a massive tower.

The sculpted Romanesque capitals, especially those on the south side, are of exceptional artistic treatment, representing historiated scenes and stylized plant motifs. The southern porch, with its sculpted tympanum of a tetramorphic Christ, is one of the only two Romanesque porches of this type in Brittany. Subsequent changes, such as the addition of transepts in the 1950s, have altered some parts, but the church retains major medieval elements, including a 12th century bentier.

Ranked a historic monument in 1901, the Church of Saint-Jacques illustrates Breton architectural evolution, mixing Romanesque and Gothic influences. The sculptures, although eroded, bear witness to a rich iconography, evoking biblical themes and local legends, such as King Arthur's fight against a dragon. The building remains an active place of worship, preserving its furniture, including a 17th century altarpiece and an 18th century choir fence.

The successive construction campaigns are visible: the Romanesque nave (ca. 1140-1160), the Gothic nave (XIV-15th century), and the tower surmounted by an octagonal dome in the 17th century. The simpler capitals on the north side contrast with those on the south side, more elaborate, perhaps reflecting distinct artistic influences. The church, owned by the municipality, is a symbol of Perros-Guirec's religious and historical heritage.
