Origin and history
Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Bannes Church is a Catholic church located in the Mayenne department, in the village of Bannes. Dating from the first quarter of the 12th century, it embodies the style of the small rural Romanesque churches of this period. Its architecture preserves typical elements such as an apse, a roofed tower, narrow Romanesque windows, and a arched transept in a cradle. The apparent structure of the nave and the arcades add to its historical character.
In 1888, workers by chance rediscovered 14th-century murals during bleaching work inside the building. These frescoes, hidden under layers of badigeon, testify to the artistic and religious evolution of the monument in the Middle Ages. The church also houses an 18th-century tuffle altarpiece, 15th-century baptismal fonts, and a 16th-century terracotta statue of the Virgin, all classified as objects.
The building depends on the parish of Saint-Pierre-du-Maine and was listed as historical monuments on May 8, 1958. This protection concerns the church as a whole, including its dedicated cemetery, typical of medieval rural churches. The monument thus illustrates both Romanesque religious architecture and subsequent artistic transformations, while remaining anchored in local community life.
The sources available, including Marcel Deyres's references in Maine roman (1985), underline its importance in the region's Romanesque heritage. The precise location of the church, at the address 1 Rue du Lavoir in Bannes, is listed in the Mérimée base under the code Insee 53019, confirming its territorial anchorage in the department of Mayenne and the region Pays de la Loire.
