Origin and history

The church Saint-Jean-Baptiste de la Bastide d'Olette is a religious monument located in the commune of Olette, in the Occitanie region. Although its name and location are clearly identified, the available sources do not specify its construction period or the milestones in its history. Its status as a bastide suggests, however, a foundation linked to an organized settlement period, typical of the Middle Ages in southern France.

The bastids, new villages created mainly between the 12th and 14th centuries, played a central role in the territorial and economic organization of the region. They often had a church, a place of worship but also a community gathering. In Olette, as in other similar places, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church probably served as a focal point for religious and social life, reflecting the importance of sacred buildings in the structuring of medieval villages and their sustainability until the contemporary era.
