Origin and history
The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste-de-La-Salle is a parish church built in Reims, avenue Jean-Jaurès, during the last quarter of the 19th century. Its construction responded to the rapid population growth of the neighbourhood, requiring a dedicated place of worship. A first chapel, dependent on the parish of Saint-André, was erected between 1880 and 1891 at 182 rue Jean-Jaurès, marking the beginnings of this religious and community project.
The construction of the present church began symbolically with the laying of the first stone by Cardinal Langenieux on 24 June 1890. Consecrated on 28 July 1895, however, it suffered major damage during the German bombings during the First World War. The repairs, long and complex, did not complete until the 1930s, leading to an official re-opening on 3 October 1937.
This monument illustrates both the urban expansion of Reims at the end of the 19th century and the destructive consequences of global conflicts on local heritage. Its reconstruction reflects the resilience of the parish community and the cultural importance of religious buildings in remise history.
