Origin and history

The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Lézardrieux, located in the municipality of the same name in Brittany (Côtes-d'Armor), is a religious building built between the 15th, 16th and 18th centuries. Its current architecture, in the shape of a Latin cross, includes a nave flanked by six-spans, a transept, and a choir adorned with carved sandstones depicting characters and animals. These stylistic elements reflect the artistic and technical evolutions of each period of construction, including the transition between late Gothic and classical influences.

An inscription held inside the church attests to a major reconstruction in 1580, marking an important phase of its history. The bell tower dates from 1749 and illustrates the baroque additions typical of the period. Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 18 April 1948, the church now belongs to the commune. Its central location, on the Church Square, has made it a heritage and community landmark for centuries, although the accuracy of its geographical location is considered mediocre (level 5/10).

The sablières of the choir, decorated with figurative motifs, offer a rare testimony of local craftsmanship and popular beliefs of the modern era. These sculptures, combined with the cross structure and the bell tower-wall, underline the multifunctional role of the building: place of worship, but also symbol of gathering and identity for the inhabitants of Lezardrieux. The absence of detailed sources on sponsors or artisans, however, limits the precise knowledge of its social and religious history.
