Origin and history
The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Perrigny, located in the Jura, is an emblematic building of the Jura churches, combining a Romanesque nave and a Gothic choir. Its construction spans three centuries, from the 15th to the 17th century, with successive additions and modifications reflecting the architectural evolutions and needs of the local community.
In the 15th century, the nave was erected on the foundations of an ancient choir or chapel, transformed to serve as a choir. In 1524, the latter was rebuilt and enlarged, marking a first phase of expansion. The chapel dedicated to Saint-Sébastien, added in 1630 by the eponymous brotherhood, and the bell tower-porch erected in 1683 testify to the subsequent additions. The bedside and nave bays, modernized in the 17th century, complete these transformations.
In 1840, a new church was built in another location, relegating this building to the role of cemetery chapel from 1848. Despite this change of function, the church retains its historical character, with architectural elements typical of the region, such as the persistence of the Romanesque nave and the addition of the Gothic choir.
The building is listed in the Historic Monuments by order of January 8, 1997, recognizing its heritage value. Today, there remains a testimony of local religious and architectural practices, while being a marker of Perrigny's history and community.
The location of the church, although documented, has moderate accuracy (level 6/10), with an approximate address at 31 Rue du Vieux Mont. This monument, owned by the municipality, continues to attract interest in its mix of styles and its multi-series history.
