Origin and history
Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church is a religious building located in Riotord, Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 13th century, it features a portal and interior capitals decorated with animal representations inspired by the Greco-Roman style, attributed to the Italian school. These decorative elements, rare for the time and the region, highlight an unusual Mediterranean artistic influence in this area.
The church was partially protected in respect of historical monuments, with an inscription by ministerial decree on 9 January 1926. This recognition specifically concerns sculpted capitals, considered as outstanding elements of the local architectural heritage. The building remains today the property of the town of Riotord, where it occupies a central place in Main Square.
The precise location of the church is attested by several sources, including the Merimée base, which places it in the 3 place of the Church in Riotord. Its Insee code (43163) is administratively linked to the Puy-en-Velay district. Although the practical information about his visit is not detailed in the available sources, his status as a historical monument and his artistic singularity make him a point of notable heritage interest in the Velay.
