Origin and history

The church of Saint-Jean d'Abbetot, located in La Cerlangue (Seine-Maritime), is attested before 1066, when Raoul de Tancarville donated it to the Abbey of Saint-Georges of Boscherville. The choir and cross tower, built in the last quarter of the 11th century, bear witness to its Romanesque origin. The nave, built in the 16th century, reuses a Romanesque cornice, while the stair turret dates from the 15th century. The bays and the west façade were added in the 18th century.

Ranked a historic monument in 1840, the church benefited from major restorations in the 19th century. In 1855, architect Desmarest and painter Dauvergné restored the crypt and his paintings. The building preserves wall paintings from the 12th, 14th, 17th and 18th centuries, located in the crypt, the choir, the apse and the nave. The cross of the transept, covered by a vault in the 15th century, illustrates the successive architectural transformations.

The church was also restored from 1837 under the direction of Abbé Cochet, emphasizing its heritage importance. Its protected elements, including the crypt and its painted decorations, reflect a rich history marked by varied artistic influences. Today, it remains a major testimony of Norman religious architecture, combining medieval heritage and subsequent changes.
