Origin and history

The church of Saint John of Joigny, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, finds its origins in the thirteenth century, as evidenced by its columns engaged in the choir. Located at the top of the city, near the Gondi Castle, it is a major place of worship for the local community. Its oldest remains reflect primitive Gothic architecture, typical of the religious buildings of this time in Burgundy.

Reconstructed around 1490 after the ravages of the Hundred Years' War, the church underwent a new fire in 1530 which seriously damaged its structure. The restoration works, conducted from 1548 to 1596 under the direction of Jean Chéreau, preserve the Gothic style in the lower parts, while the upper floors adopt Renaissance elements, such as the false triforium and the glass windows. This stylistic fusion is illustrated by the lowly cradle vault decorated with embroidery motifs.

The building is marked by the presence of Saint Vincent de Paul, who stayed there as tutor of the children of Count Joigny, lord of Gondi, at the beginning of the seventeenth century. Ranked a historical monument in 1913, the church houses artistic treasures, including the tomb of Countess Aélis de Joigny (XIIIth century), a unique complete example of medieval gissing, and a 16th century tomb, classified in 1992.

The interior also contains major works: a 16th century carved group representing seven characters, a Virgin with Child in painted stone, and an 18th century work bench, all classified in 1992. The symphonic organ, enlarged in 1864 by Paul Chazelle, then restored several times (notably in 2011 and 2018), has been classified since 1960. Its buffet and instrumental part bear witness to the liturgical musical evolution.

Architecturally, the church symbolizes Joigny's resilience, rebuilt after the conflicts, and its central role in religious and social life. Gothic and Renaissance influences coexist harmoniously, reflecting the artistic and historical transitions of the region. Its classification and its protected works make it a must-see heritage of Yonne and Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
