Origin and history
Saint-Jean de La Lande-Chasles Church, located in the Maine-et-Loire department, is a monument dating back to the twelfth century. The nave and the choir, built in two distinct countrysides during the first half of this century, form the oldest heart of the building. These Romanesque elements testify to the medieval religious architecture typical of the region, marked by simplicity and robustness adapted to the needs of the rural communities of the time.
Over the centuries, the church has undergone several significant changes and additions. The frame and arch bell tower, dating from the first half of the 16th century, reflect a period of transition between the late Gothic and the early Renaissance. The window of the nave, probably installed in the seventeenth century, and the sacristy built in 1699, illustrate the stylistic and liturgical evolutions of the modern era. Finally, the west porch, added in the first half of the 19th century, shows an adaptation to the more recent practical and aesthetic needs.
Ranked among the historical monuments since 1984, the Saint John church includes in its protection the stone altarpiece, a remarkable element of its interior heritage. This status underlines its importance both architectural and historical for the local heritage. The management of the building is now the responsibility of the municipality of La Lande-Chasles, which ensures its preservation and, potentially, its openness to the public.
