Origin and history

The church of Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste de Cudos is a Catholic religious building located in the heart of the village of Cudos, in the department of Gironde (New Aquitaine). Built in the 14th century, it illustrates the Gothic architecture of the region, marked by a fortified gate, typical of medieval defensive churches.

In the 17th century, the church was enlarged with the addition of lower sides to the nave and two side gates surrounding the central gate. These changes reflect the evolution of liturgical needs and the growth of the local population. A bell tower was added later in the 19th century, completing its present silhouette.

The building has been listed as historic monuments since December 21, 1925, recognizing its heritage value. It houses three protected altarpieces, restored in 2003, testimonies of local sacred art. The property of the church belongs to the municipality of Cudos, emphasizing its anchor in community life.

The location of the church, in the centre of the village, and its fortified gate suggest a historical role both spiritual and defensive. The sources available (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Merimée base) confirm its importance in the girondin religious heritage, linked to the medieval and modern history of the region.
