Origin and history

Saint Joseph de Roubaix Church is a Catholic church located in the Fontenoy district of northern France. Built between 1876 and 1878, it is the work of the Belgian architect Jean-Baptiste Béthune, also author of the convent of the Clarisses of Roubaix. This monument, built for the local employers, aimed to catechecate the workers of the city, thus reflecting the social and religious concerns of the industrial era.

The church is distinguished by its neo-Gothic style and its brick façade. His interior decoration, made by the painter Guillaume Deumens, and his stained glass windows, especially those of the choir from the Parisian workshops of Claudius Lavergne and the stained glass window of the Rosary of the Stalins-Jansens workshops of Antwerp (primed at the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1889), make him a remarkable example of religious art of the late nineteenth century. The building was listed as a historic monument in 1992, and was classified in 1993.

After six years of restoration started in 2014, the church reopened in April 2021, marking an important event for the local community. She has also been involved in notable marriages, such as that of boxer Mamadou Michel N'Diaye in 1951. Its history and architecture make it an emblematic heritage of Roubaix and Hauts-de-France.
