Origin and history
The Saint-Laurent church of Clermont-Ferrand, located in Puy-de-Dôme, is an emblematic monument whose origins date back to at least the twelfth century. According to Grégoire de Tours, his foundation would be attributed to Count Victorius, governor of the Auvergne under wisigoth King Euric (479-488). This building would have preceded the parish church of Notre-Dame-du-Port, thus marking its historic importance in the city. Its architecture is divided into two distinct parts: a XII-century choir, representative of the Romanesque auvergnat style, and a nave probably rebuilt in the 17th century.
The church choir illustrates the major features of the novel Auvergnat. The right span, narrower than the nave, is vaulted with a broken cradle and once communicated with a bell tower now gone. The semicircular apse, arched in cul-de-four, is adorned with a five arch arches in the middle of a hanger resting on columns. These decorative elements, including capitals with plant motifs, reflect the local craftsmanship of the time. The uneven arches of the cul-de-four are typical of regional Romanesque architecture, highlighting the artistic and cultural heritage of the Auvergne.
Ranked a historic monument since December 31, 1976, St. Lawrence Church is now protected for its apse, which is listed in the additional inventory. The building, owned by an association, bears witness to the architectural and religious evolutions of Clermont-Ferrand throughout the centuries. Its location, at 5 rue Saint-Laurent, makes it a major heritage point of interest in the city centre, attracting lovers of history and medieval architecture.
