Origin and history

The Saint-Laurent church of Puy-en-Velay, founded in 1221 by Étienne de Chalençon for the order of the Preacher Brothers, was enlarged in 1340 thanks to the gifts of the Viscounts of Polignac. It is distinguished by its fire, since 1380, which has housed the entrails of the connétable Bertrand Du Guesclin, emblematic figure of the Hundred Years' War. Ranked a historic monument in 1906, it embodies the medieval religious architecture of the region.

Located below Carnot Square, near the Emile-Roux hospital centre, the church is at the crossroads of three major axes: Chantemesse Boulevard, Carnot Boulevard and Aiguilhe Avenue. Its central location makes it a place of passage and gathering since the Middle Ages, marked by its spiritual and commemorative role.

Joseph Merklin's symphonic organ, inaugurated in 1882, has 27 games on two keyboards and one pedal. Considered a 19th century masterpiece, it was dismantled in 1973 to protect the instrument during the restoration of the church (1971-1988), but has not yet been resettled. Its instrumental part is included in the additional inventory of Historic Monuments, and an association, UNDA MARIS, has been campaigning for its restoration since 2010.

The restoration work carried out between 1971 and 1988 was aimed at saving the building, which was threatened with collapse. Despite these efforts, the organ remains unusable, while the church continues to host concerts and offices, perpetuating its cultural and religious role. 3D reconstructions of the organ and church were carried out to document this exceptional heritage.

The St. Lawrence church is also linked to local noble families, such as the Viscounts of Polignac, whose gifts allowed its expansion in the 14th century. Its fire dedicated to Du Guesclin makes it a national place of memory, attracting historians and visitors interested in the medieval history and Dominican heritage of the region.
