Origin and history

The church of Saint-Léger de Cognac, built from 1130 by Benedictine monks of the abbey of Ebreuil, replaces a first wooden building of the eleventh century. Its initial construction, of an estimated duration between 50 and 80 years, combines Saintongese, angoumoisine and perigordin architectural influences. The monument, initially a Romanesque priorural, underwent major changes in the 13th and 14th centuries, with the addition of ogival vaults, side chapels and a flamboyant rosette offered by Jean d'Orléans in the 15th century. The building, converted into a Protestant temple during the Wars of Religion (from 1598), was restored by Paul Abadie in the 19th century, adding neo-Gothic frescoes and remodelled modillons.

In the 12th century, the Romanesque facade, characteristic of the Saintongeese style, is decorated with a carved portal depicting the signs of the zodiac and the work of the months, as well as the historic capitals. Subsequent Gothic modifications, such as the 14th century vaults or the 15th century rosette, create a stylistic assemblage unique in the region. The transept and choir, rebuilt in the 13th century, contain remarkable elements such as a marble Pietà of Carrara (XIXth century) and a altarpiece of the Sacred Heart of the 17th century, while the stained glass windows, some of which date from the 13th century, illustrate religious scenes and local saints.

Ranked a historic monument in 1883, the church preserves traces of its turbulent past, such as the sculptures damaged during the iconoclastic thrusts of the Wars of Religion or the hearts of the local lords (Otard, Jean de Monbron) walled in the chapel of the Virgin. The restorations of the 19th and 20th centuries, especially those carried out between 1995 and 1999, preserved its frescoes, its 19th century organs (39 games) and its window radiating from the bedside, restored after a fire in 1990. Today, it remains the main parish church of Cognac, witness to eight centuries of religious and architectural history.
