Origin and history
The church of Saint-Léger de Nouâtre, built around 1483, is a homogeneous religious building, characterized by a sober and harmonious volume. It adopts a Latin cross plan, with a nave of three spans with curved vaults, a transept with vaulted chapels, and a polygonal apse choir. The penetrating vaults and bays decorated with quadrilobes illustrate its late Gothic style. Its originality lies in the murals of the nave, telling the legendary life of Saint Reverend, whose body, transported by monks of Bayeux fleeing the Normans, would have passed through an old church of Nouâtre (now disappeared) before being transferred to Poitiers, then to Saint-Jean-d'Angély.
The inscriptions, now very degraded, once explained these scenes with rare iconography. The building, classified as a Historic Monument in 2002, retains a remarkable architectural integrity, despite the disappearance of the early church. Its altarpiece closes the abside and conceals the sacristy, adding to its mystery. The local tradition, though it is a perforation of the life and death of Saint Reverend in Nouâtre, bears witness to the historical and spiritual anchoring of this place in the region.
The location of the church at 12 Rue Louis Bailly is estimated with satisfactory a priori accuracy (level 6/10). Owned by the municipality, it remains an accessible heritage, although details of its openness to the public or its current uses (visits, events) are not specified in the available sources.
