Origin and history
Saint-Léger de Saint-Léger-de-Balson Church, located in the Gironde department in New Aquitaine, is a monument dating back to the 12th century. From this period she retained her apse in cul-de-four and a span of choir vaulted in cradle. The rest of the building, including its three naves covered with arched vaults and its two sides illuminated by sill windows, dates mainly from the 16th century, with redevelopments in Romanesque style.
Ranked a historic monument in 1973, the church houses remarkable elements such as two altars and their 18th century altars, also classified. A bishop's statue of the same period, now disappeared after a flight in 1993, completed this heritage. The building thus illustrates centuries of architectural and religious history, in a local context marked by the Landes forest and a dispersed human occupation.
The commune of Saint-Léger-de-Balson, created in 1793 from part of the parish of Saint-Symphorien, is part of a rural and wooded territory, typical of the south-gironde. The church, located in Bourg, played a central role in community life, notably as a place of pilgrimage with the nearby Saint-Clair source, renowned for its healing virtues. Its double-ranked arch bell tower and side chapels reflect the stylistic evolutions and liturgical needs of medieval and modern times.
The village, crossed by the old railway line Le Nizan - Saint-Symphorien, now transformed into a bike path, also preserves traces of a medieval past with the ruins of the fortress of Castelnau de Cernes. These elements underline the strategic and religious importance of Saint-Léger-de-Balson in an area marked by logging and a preserved rural history.
