Origin and history

The church Saint-Léger de Tannay, located in the Nièvre department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a religious building whose origins date back to the 14th century, with major changes in the 16th century. Classified as historical monuments in 1840, it bears witness to a complex architectural history, marked by partial destruction during the Hundred Years' War and successive reconstructions. His plan included a three-vessel nave, a transept extended by chapels, and a flat bedside choir, reflecting the stylistic evolutions and liturgical needs of the era.

The initial construction of the church was undertaken in the 13th and early 14th centuries, after the erection of the chapel of Tannay in the parish in 1130 by Bishop Fromund de Nevers. Ravaged during the Hundred Years War, it was restored in the 15th century, with major works including the reconstruction of the nave, the restoration of the choir, and the addition of a sacristy in 1502. The bell tower, decorated with coat of arms and the name I. DELAPORTE, was erected in the late 15th or early 16th century, illustrating the influence of local donors. Subsequent changes, such as the overhaul of the foothills in the 19th century or the addition of decorative plaster elements, testify to its continuous maintenance.

Among the remarkable elements, a painting by Amédée Jullien (1819–87), The Baptism of Christ, adorns the baptismal fonts, adding an artistic touch of the nineteenth century. The Romanesque remains discovered in 1966, including a capital preserved in the right collateral, recall the existence of a first medieval building. The church, owned by the commune, remains a symbol of the religious and architectural heritage of the Nièvre, mixing medieval heritage and later transformations.
