Origin and history

The church of Saint-Léonard de Fougères, founded in the 12th century by the monks of Pontlevoy, rises on the plateau overlooking the castle of Fougères. This creation follows a conflict with the religious of Marmoutiers concerning the church of Saint-Nicolas. It quickly became the parish of the bourg-neuf, and was rebuilt between 1407 and 1636 in a flamboyant Gothic style to meet the population growth of the city. Profaned during the Revolution, it underwent major changes in the 19th century by architects Tourneux and Prioul, including a reorientation of the sanctuary and the construction of a new facade.

The main façade, built in the 19th century, replaces the old choir and is inspired by the flamboyant models of Île-de-France, using the keranton for an elegant result. The bell tower, made of local granite, combines ancient elements and more recent additions, such as a Renaissance gallery and a belfry surmounted by a dome. The interior, of basilical type, has a nave of nine spans with collaterals, modified in the 19th century to standardize volumes. The stained glass windows, mostly created in 1959 by François Lorin after the destruction of 1944, include medieval fragments, including the oldest window in Brittany, dating from the 12th century and coming from the Abbey of Saint-Denis.

The church houses remarkable furniture, including organs built in 1881 by Louis Debierre, inaugurated by César Franck and Eugène Gigout. Among the works of art are classified statues, such as The Education of the Virgin (XVI century) and paintings by the brothers Deveria, including L'Assumption (1835). The neogothic high altar, made in 1882 by Poussielgue-Rusand, and a pulpit to preach from 1716 complete this heritage complex. Classified as an additional inventory of historical monuments in 1944, the church embodies the architectural and artistic evolution of Fougères.

The 19th century transformations profoundly altered the structure of the building, adding two spans to the west and creating a new choir. The lateral chapels, initially independent, were integrated into the collaterals, while the richly decorated northern facade contrasts with the south side, formerly bordered by the ramparts. Modern stained glass windows, dedicated to Breton saints or venerated locally, stand alongside medieval remains, testifying to the cultural and artistic continuity of the place.

The church of Saint-Léonard plays a central role in the religious and cultural life of Fougères. Its history reflects the political and social upheavals, from its monastic foundation to its post-revolutionary reconstruction. Today, it remains an active place of worship, with a Sunday Mass at 11 am, and a preserved architectural and artistic heritage, attracting visitors and faithful.
