Origin and history

The church of Saint-Louis de Garches came into being as early as 1209, with a first construction of which few traces remain. His consecration to Saint Louis, shortly after his canonization in 1298, made him a pioneer monument in France, as evidenced by a commemorative plaque above the door of the sacristy. The original building was partially destroyed in 1871 during the Battle of Buzenval, a landmark episode of the Franco-Prussian war, which ravaged part of the local heritage.

The reconstruction of the church was entrusted in 1876 to architect Blondel and contractor Tillet, giving birth to the current building. The dedicated cemetery, originally joined to the church, was moved between 1833 and 1834 to form the new cemetery of Garches. The restoration campaigns began in the 1980s: 19th century stained glass windows in 1980, organ of origin renovated in 1983, arrow rebuilt in 1988, and interior and exterior renovations until 1995. A bell dating back to 1787, which was listed as an inventory of historical monuments in 1944, bears witness to the historicity and heritage value of the site.

The Saint-Louis church thus embodies almost eight centuries of history, mixing medieval heritage, post-conflict reconstruction and modern preservation. His tympanum carved in 1990 and his cross blessed in 1989 underline the desire to perpetuate his spiritual and cultural role in the heart of Garches, in the Hauts-de-Seine. Its status as the first church dedicated to Saint Louis in France gives it a special place in the national religious heritage.
