Origin and history
Saint-Maclou Church is a Catholic religious building in the commune of Colombiers, Charente-Maritime, New Aquitaine. Built in the 12th century, it features a typical architecture of this period, with a unique nave and a span of choir covered with a dome surmounted by a bell tower. The vault of the nave is now absent, but the sculpted capitals and modillons, as well as the dome on trunks, testify to its historical and artistic importance.
Classified as historical monuments by decree of 20 July 1908, the Saint-Maclou Church is a remarkable example of Saint-Maclou's Romanesque heritage. Its dome, supported by double arches falling on adorned capitals, illustrates the architectural techniques of the period. Although the nave has lost its vault, the preserved carved elements offer a precious glimpse of local medieval art.
The building, owned by the municipality of Colombiers, is referenced in the Merimée base under the code Insee 17115. Its approximate address, 7 Rue des Moulins, allows to locate it in the centre of the village. The church, open to the visit, plays a central role in the religious and cultural heritage of the region, attracting lovers of history and Romanesque architecture.
