Origin and history

The Church of Saint-Martin d'Augy is a religious building located in the current municipality of Saint-Leopardin-d'Augy, in the department of Allier. It was originally the parish church of the village of Augy, an independent commune until its merger with Saint-Leopardin in 1843. This monument, whose construction dates back to the 12th century, preserves architectural elements typical of Romanesque art, including its portal listed as Historic Monument since 1961.

The church gate, formerly the main gate of the monastery of Saint-Leopardin, was preserved despite the latter's destruction around 1880 when a new church was built. This portal is distinguished by its low-hanging tympanum, supported by twin columnettes and capitals decorated with foliage hooks. The ensemble is framed by two pilasters surmounted by a frieze, illustrating the know-how of 12th century artisans.

The Saint-Martin church of Augy is now owned by the municipality of Saint-Leopardin-d'Augy. Although its detailed history remains partially documented, its classified portal and Romanesque architecture make it a valuable testimony of Bourbon's religious heritage. The location of the building, in the heart of the village of Saint-Leopardin-d'Augy, reflects its central role in medieval community life and its importance in local history.
