Origin and history
The church of Saint Martin, located in the Loiret, is a religious building whose oldest parts date back to the 12th century, including the base of the bell tower and the foundations of the piles. These Romanesque elements testify to a first phase of medieval construction, characteristic of the rural churches of the time. The polygonal bedside and the three-vessel nave reflect a structure designed to accommodate an expanding local community, in a context where parish churches played a central role in social and spiritual life.
In the 15th century, the church underwent major changes: the arches, windows and collaterals were rebuilt or redesigned, incorporating late Gothic elements. The upper part of the bell tower, originally Romanesque, is enhanced at this time, while the tympanum of the vaults, in coated masonry, suggests technical adaptations. The 16th century marked a new overhaul with the west façade, probably to modernize the entrance or strengthen the stability of the building. Repair work was attested to in the 18th and 19th centuries, as evidenced by the keystone dated 1755 in the nave.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 6 March 1928, the Church of Saint Martin illustrates the stylistic superpositions common in rural religious buildings. Its official protection underscores its heritage interest, mixing Romanesque, Gothic and reborn heritage. The location in Auxy (Loiret), in a region marked by agriculture and river exchanges via the Loire, explains its sustainable role as a place of worship and assembly. Subsequent repairs, particularly in the 19th century, were designed to preserve an aging building, while adapting its use to the changing needs of the parish.
The accuracy of its location (7 Place de l'Église, 45340 Auxy) and its Insee code (45018) confirm its anchoring in the territory of the Centre-Val de Loire, a region where parish churches, often remodeled over centuries, are major identifiers. The lack of mention of specific sponsors or artisans in available sources limits the knowledge of the actors in its construction, but its architectural history reflects the local dynamics of patronage and collective maintenance.
