Origin and history
The church Saint-Martin d'Ygrande is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Ygrande, in the department of Allier (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Built mainly in the 12th century, it belongs to the Romanesque style, although transitional influences are visible in the arrangement of the arches of the nave and the lower side. Its architecture includes a nave with collaterals, weak transepts, a central apse and a partially destroyed northern apsidiole, while the southern apsidiole was replaced by a sacristy.
Classified as historical monuments in 1875, the church is owned by the municipality of Ygrande. Its listing in 1875 shows its early heritage importance. Available sources, such as the Merimée or Monumentum base, confirm its status as a protected building and its role in the local religious landscape. The precise address, 31 Rue Émile Guillaumin, and its Insee code (03320) allow to situate it in the historical Bourbonnais.
The Saint Martin church reflects the architectural characteristics of the Romanesque churches of the region, with a sober but functional structure. Subsequent changes, such as the destruction of the southern absidiole and the addition of sacristy, illustrate the adaptations suffered by the building over the centuries. Its openness to the public and its maintenance are now the municipal responsibility, although the sources do not specify the current modalities of visit or use.
