Origin and history

The Saint-Martin church of Châtenay-en-France is a parish Catholic building built at the end of the 18th century under the Ancien Régime. Designed by the architect Jacques Cellier, it is distinguished by its sober neoclassical style but well proportionate. The church replaces an ancient medieval building, mentioned as early as 1097, which was at the present location of the castle. This first building, in poor condition in the 18th century, was demolished to give way to a more functional construction, inaugurated in 1786. The tower, unstable, was rebuilt in 1899.

The first mention of the church dates from a donation of 1097 by Guillaume de Montfort, bishop of Paris, to the priory Saint-Martin-des-Champs. This priory, linked to the order of Cluny, became lord of Châtenay-en-France until the Revolution. Several papal bubbles (1119, 1142, 1147) confirm this donation. The early church, located near the seigneurial farm, was partially renovated in 1568 and 1645, but its condition deteriorated in the 18th century justified its reconstruction.

The current building, classified as a historic monument in 1990, houses remarkable furniture, including an 18th-century procession stick, a Louis XV confessional, and 16th-century statues. After a period of decommissioning in the 1970s, the church was restored and reopened to worship. It also preserves funerary slabs from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as a painting by Liebault inspired by Charles Le Brun.

The interior architecture, marked by a unique nave and a structured narthex, reflects a search for harmony and functionality. The walls, animated by bosses and cornices, create an intimate space despite modest dimensions. The bedside, illuminated by a stained glass window depicting Saint Martin's Charity, and the classified furniture enrich its heritage.

The church, initially decommissioned after World War II, regained its cult vocation thanks to a restoration begun in 1977. Today, it hosts occasional celebrations and remains an architectural and historical testimony of religious neoclassicism in Île-de-France.
