Church: registration by decree of 26 December 1927
Origin and history
The Saint-Martin church of Claville, located in the department of Eure in Normandy, finds its origins in a first cultural building attested as early as the eleventh century, destroyed during the Hundred Years War. The present church, rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries, bears witness to this pivotal period with a bell tower dated precisely 1517. Its chapels, added in the seventeenth century, and its 18th century portal illustrate later architectural developments.
The church's stained glass windows, partly from the 16th century and completed in the 19th century, are a notable heritage element. Ranked a historic monument by decree of 26 December 1927, the church benefited from major works in the 1990s, financed up to 800,000 francs by the municipality. These interventions were aimed at preserving an emblematic edifice of Norman religious heritage.
The Church of Saint Martin, a communal property, remains an active Catholic place of worship while embodying local history. Its inclusion in the inventory of historical monuments and its mention in bases such as Mérimée underline its architectural and cultural importance. Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its central role in the town of Claville, where it is located Place Bance.
