Origin and history

The church of Saint-Martin de Coirac, located in the Gironde department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, finds its origins at the end of the 11th or 12th century. The priory of the village, given to the abbey of La Sauve-Majeure in 1086, was enriched by the local lords, confirming the age of the current building. The ruins of a Gallo-Roman villa, called Gallo Bassa, underpin the village's early settlement, adding a historical dimension prior to medieval construction.

In the 16th century, a side of two vaulted bays of warheads was added to the south of the church, changing its original architecture. The Romanesque portal, classified as a historical monument in 1925, is surmounted by a neo-Gothic bell tower erected in 1875. This portal, adorned with six figurative and plant capitals, reflects a complex iconography inspired by monastic manuscripts. The models of the facade, although less elaborate than those of the Abbey of La Sauve-Majeure, evoke symbolic themes such as the warning against lust.

The cemetery houses a mission cross dated 1897, while a road cross, laid in 1838 at the entrance to the village, marks the location of an ancient medieval salvation. This territory, protected by God's Peace, allowed the inhabitants to live free from feudal violence. The sculptures of the portal, such as the chain of the seven beards or the fight against a dragon, combine religious symbols and allegorical narratives, bearing witness to the artistic and spiritual influence of the time.

The north and south capitals of the portal present various scenes: animals attacking a pine apple (eucharistic symbol), characters chained with intertwined beards, or fighting against a dragon, perhaps evoking a psychostasis directed by Saint Michael. The more stylized bedside modillons include geometric patterns, human or animal heads, and a re-used metope representing a bird. These elements underline the church's educational and spiritual role in the medieval community.

Today, Saint Martin Church remains a major architectural and historical testimony of Coirac. Its registered portal, Gothic and neo-Gothic additions, as well as the surrounding crosses, illustrate almost a millennium of religious and local history, from Gallo-Roman foundations to modern transformations.
