Origin and history
The Church of St.Martin of Cricqueboeuf, also known as the Chapel of Lierres, is a Catholic religious building located in the village of Cricqueboeuf, Calvados department, Normandy. Dating from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, it represents an example of Norman medieval architecture. Its alternative name, "Chambre aux Lierres", has been officially recognized since its inscription as historical monuments on 20 May 1927.
The church is mentioned in French literature, especially in A L'ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs, a novel by Marcel Proust. The author refers to it as Carqueville, although the monument is actually located in Cricqueboeuf. This literary mention adds a cultural and historical dimension to the building, linking it to the Proustian heritage.
On the administrative level, the church is listed as a historical monument under the name "Chambre aux Lierres". It belongs to the municipality of Cricqueboeuf and is located along the road between Honfleur and Trouville. Its Insee code, 14202, clearly links it to the Calvados department and the Normandy region. Available sources, such as Monumentum and Wikipedia, confirm its protected status and precise location, although some geographical data are marked as approximate.
