Rotrou du Perche - Bishop of Chalons Author of the donation in 1196.

Origin and history

The church of Saint-Martin de Gigny, located in the suburbs of Gigny in Saint-Dizier, is mentioned for the first time in 1196 in a donation by the bishop of Châlons, Rotrou du Perche. Originally outside the city walls, it served as a seat for a cure dependent on the Abbé de Montier-en-Der. Its history is marked by destructions, especially during the siege of Saint-Dizier, which saved only its 13th century portal, still visible today.

Rebuilt after the damage suffered, the church almost disappeared in the 1970s due to the massive urbanization of the neighborhood. Finally preserved, it was integrated into the heart of a new arc-shaped neighbourhood. Its portal, the only remaining medieval vestige, was declared a historic monument on 1 July 1974, bearing witness to its heritage importance.

Today owned by the municipality of Saint-Dizier, the church Saint-Martin de Gigny illustrates the urban and architectural evolution of the city, between Romanesque heritage and modern adaptations. Its current location, Place du Général de Gaulle, makes it a historical landmark in a contemporary environment.
