Church of Saint Martin (Doc. D 96): inscription by order of 17 September 1969

Origin and history

Saint-Martin de Hyds Church is a religious monument located in the commune of Hyds, in the department of Allier in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its origins date back to the 12th century for its eastern part (eastern nave, transept, choir and southern chapel), reflecting Romanesque architecture marked by capitals decorated with foliage, characters and geometric motifs. These decorative elements, typical of auvergnat Romanesque art, suggest a desire for religious and artistic symbolism unique to the medieval era.

In the 17th century, a chapel was added north of the choir and transept, reflecting the liturgical evolutions and the growing needs of the parish. The 18th century saw the reconstruction of the western half of the nave, as well as the addition of the floor and the bell tower arrow, partially modernizing the building. These transformations illustrate the architectural adaptations associated with the aesthetic tastes of the Lights and the practical requirements of a changing rural community.

The church was officially recognized for its heritage value in 1969, when it was included in the inventory of historical monuments. This protection highlights its central role in local history, both as a place of worship and as a witness to the architectural transformations over nearly seven centuries. Today, the building remains the property of the municipality of Hyds, perpetuating its anchor in the social and cultural life of the territory.

The structure thus combines Romanesque, classical and modern elements, offering a panorama of the construction techniques and artistic influences that marked the Bourbonnais. Capitals, in particular, are a remarkable example of regional Romanesque sculpture, while later additions reflect the spiritual and aesthetic needs of later periods.

Located at 10 Grande Rue, the Saint Martin church enjoys a central location in the village, highlighting its historical and community importance. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments makes it a protected heritage, whose preservation allows to transmit to future generations a unique architectural and spiritual heritage in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
