Origin and history
Église Saint-Martin de Jeantes is a fortified church in the Aisne department, in the commune of Jeantes, in the Hauts-de-France region. Built in the 17th century, it is one of the last fortified churches in Thiérache, built in brick with varnished brick decorations. Its architecture consists of a square dungeon pierced by murderers, initially on three levels but now reduced to two, flanked by two quadrangular turrets. The nave and the choir, of the same width, date from 1630 and 1623 respectively, while the dungeon would have been completed around 1630 or 1650.
Inside is home to 12th century Tournai blue stone baptismal fonts, as well as 400 m2 of murals made in 1962 by the Dutch painter Charles Eyck, at the request of the local parish priest. These works, evoking the styles of Modigliani and Chagall, contrast with the external austerity of the building. The church has been listed as a Historic Monument since July 9, 1987, recognizing its heritage and architectural value.
Outside, the rectangular bell tower, typical of the fortified churches of Thiérache, is flanked by two brick square towers. This material, widely used in the region, gives the building a strong visual identity. The church thus illustrates the adaptation of places of worship to defensive needs, while integrating late artistic elements, such as 20th century murals.
