Origin and history
The Saint-Martin church of La Lande-d'Airou is a Catholic building built in the early 16th century, although it retains Gothic characteristics despite its era of reborn construction. It is situated in the territory of the municipality of La Lande-d'Airou, in the department of the English Channel, in Normandy. Classified as historical monuments by order of 30 December 1987, it is located near the Middle Castle, with which it constitutes a remarkable heritage complex. Its bell tower, with a built-up roof, is decorated with a balustrade openwork south and north side.
The church formerly belonged to the dean of Gavray and the archdiocese of Val de Vire, under the diocese of Coutances. It is home to rich furniture, including several objects classified as historical monuments in 1978: a box with 18th century holy oils, a chalice and its 18th century patena, a 15th century Virgin with Child sitting, and a 14th century Virgin with Child standing. A 19th–20th century window, created by Duhamel-Marette and the Mauverney workshop, completes this ensemble.
The building, owned by the commune, is located outside the village, on the slopes of a large valley. Its architecture reflects a stylistic transition between late Gothic and early Renaissance influences. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory, with an approximate address at 1 La Retenue, in the municipality of La Lande-d'Airou.
