Origin and history

The church of Saint-Martin de Lavilledieu, located in Ardèche, finds its origins in the 11th century with the construction of a primitive church backed by a Benedictine convent. This first building, now in ruins west of the present nave, served as a place of worship and monastic life until the closure of the convent in 1639. The Romanesque bell tower, square and surmounted by a stone arrow, is the only visible vestige of this medieval period.

In the 19th century, faced with the population growth of Lavilledieu, the primitive church became too small. It was replaced in 1828 by the current building, while retaining ancient elements such as the bell tower. The ruins of the original church, as well as the still-backed cloister, bear witness to this monastic past. Although disused for regular Masses since 2003, the church still hosts special ceremonies and offices.

The interior of the church is characterized by a unique nave with four spans, flanked by two vaulted side chapels. Among the remarkable elements are a Louis XVI style high altar in gilded wood (late 18th – early 19th century), an 18th century altar cross, and medieval statues such as that of St Philomena. The marble altars of the side chapels, decorated with bas-reliefs (Sainte Famille, Annunciation, Pieta), date back to the 19th century.

The church is dedicated to Saint Martin, evangelizer of the area, who would have founded the first church of Lavilledieu in the Bayssac district. Its current location, in the heart of the old village, is surrounded by public squares and historical remains, highlighting its central role in local life since the Middle Ages.
