Origin and history
The church Saint-Martin de Lignières, located in the Aube department in the Grand Est region, is a religious building built in the 12th century. It was largely rebuilt in the 16th century, while maintaining its choir of Romanesque origin. This architectural mix reflects stylistic evolutions between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, with a particularly remarkable 16th century portal.
The church was partially protected as historical monuments: the building (with the exception of the gate) was registered by decree of 17 March 1925, while the gate was classified on 13 January 1938. These protective measures reflect the heritage value of the building, including its Renaissance portal, which is considered a major architectural element. In 1986, the Foundation for the Protection of French Art supported urgent work, stressing the importance of preserving this heritage.
On the administrative level, the church belongs to the commune of Lignières and is located precisely at 1 Rue des Quatre Vents. Its Insee code (10196) links it to the district of Troyes, in the former Champagne-Ardenne region, now integrated in the Grand Est. The available sources, such as the Merimée base or the reference works cited (Arbois de Jubainville, Morel-Payen), confirm its status as an emblematic monument to the religious heritage of Aubois.
