Origin and history

The Saint-Martin church of Marcilly-en-Gault is a Catholic religious building that began construction in the 12th century. Located in the municipality of Marcilly-en-Gault, Sologne, it is part of the medieval architectural landscape of the Centre-Val de Loire region. Its construction continued until 1997, reflecting a long history and successive adaptations.

The church is located in the department of Loir-et-Cher, integrated into the inter-paroisial group of Lamotte-Beuvron, Vouzon, Chaon, Souvigny-en-Sologne, Saint-Viâtre and Marcilly-en-Gault. This group illustrates the contemporary religious organization of the region, while anchoring the building in an active parish network.

The Church of Saint Martin, by its architecture and history, bears witness to the spiritual and community life of the Sologne since the Middle Ages. The churches of this period often served as a place of assembly, prayer and management of local affairs, playing a central role in the life of the surrounding villages.
