Origin and history
The church of St.Martin of Marthon, classified as Historic Monument, dates from the 12th century. It is distinguished by an atypical architecture: the apse and the apsidiole form an irregular ensemble, while the square bell tower, composed of two floors, dominates the building. The cross between the transept and the nave is vaulted in a dome, and the transept itself is vaulted in a cradle. The nave, on the other hand, has an original vault in curved chevrons forming low arches, covered with a direct ceiling. The entrance, pierced in the south wall, contrasts with the western facade, without opening, but decorated with two floors blind arcades superimposed and surmounted by a large gable.
The church was listed as a Historical Monument by order of 15 May 1925. Its location in Marthon, Charente (Insee code 16211) is estimated with satisfactory accuracy (level 7/10). Owned by the commune, it preserves remarkable architectural elements, such as the vault in the cradle of the transept and the dome of the cross, testimonies of Romanesque construction techniques. The photographs available, such as Jack ma's under Creative Commons license, allow us to appreciate his current state.
Available sources, including Monumentum and Merimée data, indicate that the church's approximate address is 1 Stade Street, 16380 Marthon. Although its current status (open or closed to visit) is not mentioned, its listing as Historic Monuments underscores its heritage importance. The building thus illustrates the medieval architectural heritage of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, formerly Poitou-Charentes.
