Origin and history
The Saint-Martin church of Mercey-le-Grand, located in the Doubs department, is a religious building whose origins date back to the thirteenth century. It underwent major changes in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, reflecting the architectural and liturgical developments of these periods. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments, effective since 8 June 1926, reflects its heritage importance and the desire to preserve its medieval and modern heritage.
The church houses remarkable furniture, including a 15th century altarpiece classified in 1916, representing Christ and the Apostles. Other elements, such as an 18th-century bentier (inscribed in 1975), a sculpture of the Virgin and Saint John (18th century, registered in 1984), and a painting of the Rosary (18th century, registered in 2003), illustrate the richness of its artistic heritage. These individually protected objects underline the spiritual and cultural role of the building over the centuries.
Linked to the parish of Saint Vitois, dependent on the diocese of Besançon, the church is part of a local religious network rooted in the history of Franche-Comté. Its architecture and furniture make it a privileged witness to the religious practices and craftsmanship of the region, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era.
